Project Oxcart
Near here in the area of the Nevada Test Range designated Area 51 the CIA program known as Project Oxcart flew the extraordinary A-12 aircraft from 1962 to 1968. The A-12 was the predecessor of the SR-71 Blackbird, but was a single-seat slightly smaller aircraft. The A-12, originally designated as the A-11, was designed to fly higher and faster than any other production aircraft and function in a reconnaissance role to replace the U-2. It flew at speeds above Mach 3, or over 2,300 miles per hour, requiring special fuels, oils, construction techniques, and even wiring. Though the planes are not flying today, they still hold some world records for speed.
