Walpole in Norfolk County, Massachusetts — The American Northeast (New England)
Union Station
The present Walpole Union Station was built in 1893, by Melzar Waterman Allen. It replaced the previous, similar Union Station (1882-1893), which was destroyed by the fire of April, 1893. As a Union Station, by definition, it hosted more than one railroad line; the first being what would become the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad, and the second, the Old Colony Railroad.
The station was always essentially symmetrical, with two wings that housed the separate waiting rooms, baggage rooms and rest rooms for each line; with the signal tower located between the two wings. It was one of the first rural stations to have indoor plumbing.
Walpole Union Station is today the oldest station remaining on both of the rail lines that pass through this crossing. The interlocking station building is the only remaining building of a once large complex of structures that included the signal tower, freight buildings, and an express office.
In 2018, through efforts of members of the Walpole Historical Commission and the Walpole Historical Society, along with the Massachusetts Historical Commission and the cooperation of the MBTA, it was placed on the National Register of Historic Places, United States Department of the Interior. The station is owned by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) and is one of the principal stations on its Franklin Branch.
