This cairn was erected in 1954 as part of the Centennial Celebration of the County of Wellington and commemorates the pioneers of this county and district, being
the District of Wellington, 1842-49
the County of Waterloo, 1850-51
the United Counties of Wellington, Waterloo & Grey 1852
the United Counties of Wellington & Grey-1853
the County of Wellington, 1854

The cairn is made of stone from the first registry office in the County of Wellington, which was built on this site in 1847 and was replaced in 1953.
