Inscription. Reuben M. Mills established Mills Bookstore in 1892 at Fourth and Union, moving to various downtown locations before opening here in 1957. Daughter Adele Mills and her husband, Bernard Schweid, continued after he retired. They offered shelter, support and a telephone to students participating in the downtown 1960s sit-ins and fiercely opposed book banning. The bookstore left downtown in 1970, moving to various sites before closing in 1990, two years short of a century in business.

Side 2:
In 1897 Sam and Lee Zibart, typesetters at The American in Printers Alley, opened Zibart Bros. News & Cigars on Cherry Street (Fourth Ave). By 1917 they operated 12 downtown shops and hotel newsstands. Zibart's flagship book and record store opened in 1933 and became a staple of Nashville cultural life and a hub for authors, entertainers, journalists, politicians and scholars. Lee's sons, Alan and Carl, added stores in Green Hills and Madison. The downtown store closed in 1970.
