1. Lipscomb Elementary School Marker
Inscription. Professor William Lipscomb, brother of the Lipscomb University founder David Lipscomb, founded Lipscomb Elementary School as a private academy in the 1860s. Lipscomb Academy was considered to be the best prep school in the area and was known for its academic excellence. It attracted students from across the state in addition to those from outside the state of Tennessee. Non-residents boarded with families in the neighborhood homes.

In the 1860's, William Lipscomb founded Lipscomb Academy/Owen's Station School, the forerunner to Lipscomb Elementary School.

In 1878 the small log structure was replaced by a two-room frame building when Lipscomb became part of the Williamson County School System.

In 1943 electric service was brought to Lipscomb.

In 1944 the school was connected to the water service available at the WSM Radio Tower.

In 1949 a new eight-room brick building was erected with all the modern conveniences. The school featured the county's tallest flagpole when the antenna from the top of the WSM Tower was donated to the new school. With pride in the new school, there was a movement within the community

to change the name of the school to Brentwood Elementary. The effort was defeated by families who were familiar with the heritage of Lipscomb Academy.

In 1958 a fire started in the boiler room and the school burned to the ground. It was replaced in 1959 by an even larger facility. The current building was constructed in 1993. From its beginnings in the 1860's to the present day, quality education remains the top priority at the school. It serves as the bond that ties the histories of all the buildings together regardless of how many times the walls have been rebuilt.

Tidbits
• In 1943, a hard-fought battle brought electricity to Lipscomb. This allowed the school to include a hot lunch program with parents preparing the food, much of which was planted and harvested on the school grounds by the students at recess.
• Until 1993 students still had the experience of planting a garden and nurturing farm animals in the school courtyard.
• Memorial Day Parade at Lipscomb - during the 1980's and 1990's, under Principal Jesse Franks, the entire school paraded through Brenthaven neighborhood where friends and neighbors lined the street.
