Inscription.
Saint Peter Catholic Church sits on land donated in 1837 by Frédéric Henri Duperier and his wife, Hortense Berard. The original church was completed in 1837 with bricks made on the site of the former Mt. Carmel Academy, a portion of which was the former Duperier home. Saint Peter's first pastor was Rev. Charles de St. Aubin. This first church was demolished in 1888 with construction beginning on a Victorian Gothic design by New Orleanian James Freret during the pastorate of Rev. Claude Jacquet. The former churches from 1837 and 1888 are pictured on the opposite side of this marker. In 1953, under the pastorate of Msgr. Albert Bacque, the present structure (Owen Southwell, architect) replaced the former church. Interior statuary (excluding the crucifix) and smaller stained glass windows are from the 1888 church as well as the larger of the two bells.
