The history behind
The railway station at the former capital city airport of the GDR „Berlin-Schönefeld“ is an important testimony to German history and railway history and has been a listed building since 2022.

After the division, East Berlin was only connected to international air traffic via Schönefeld Airport. In the station's former reception building, elaborate surface designs with different-coloured mosaic tiles bear witness to the station's importance. The conversion from an inner-German border and control station to a regular transport station took place gradually from 1962 onwards and was directly connected to the expansion of the Berlin outer ring as a bypass around West Berlin.

The station was renovated between 1978 and 1984. The new reception building, extended platform facilities and a pedestrian tunnel with a considerable width of 12 metres were built for the occasional mass traffic at major events and the reception of state guests. The waiting shelter on platform

The marker is mounted to the exterior of what seems to be some sort of (closed) control- or waiting room on the platform by track one. The exterior of the room is encircled by a number of captioned historical photos providing a look at the operation of the Berlin-Schönefeld Airport.
4 also stands out architecturally, with its conically rising window fronts in brass- coloured anodised and red-framed metal frames and a heatable interior. A touch of luxury for long-distance travellers.
