The Welland Club
Buildings & Industries
Around 1908, local businessmen organized a lawn bowling club in Welland. In 1910, under the leadership of the first club president, Col. L. Raymond, they applied for and received from the Ontario Government, a charter and a license. That same year plans were made to build the Welland Club Ltd. Clubhouse. W.M. German, the M.P. for Welland, was given the lease by the Department of Railways and Canals to the block of land on which the club house stood. The members built and furnished a commodious and rather ornate building and formally opened it with a grand ball on New Year's Eve 1911. The club prospered and became a meeting place for business conferences and social gatherings. Activities included the ever popular lawn bowling. Greens laid out on the south side of the club house had accommodations for 32 playing fields. The club had never ceased its service nor surrendered its charter. The Welland Club is one of Welland's best known landmarks. Unfortunately the structure burned to the ground in 2011.
