'Missing Man'
By David Wagner, Santa Fe, NM
The Missing Man sculpture bench references the classic 'Missing Man Formation' with which all members of the 138th Fighter Wing are familiar. A formation of aircraft passes overhead and one plane pulls up and away to represent the loss of a member of the Wing. The central image is the logo of the 138th.
It is an interactive piece where staff and visitors can sit down and reflect on the work the Wing performs, as well as the sacrifices every member is willing to make.
The text at the bottom of the art glass, 'The Sky Begins At Our Feet' reminds everyone that we are all in the sky whenever we stand up; every member of the Wing - aircrew, ground personnel, and staff are all in the same sky in which their aircraft fly and fight.
