The History of This Bell
Joshua 4:6
In June of 1870, the Fairburn Baptist Church of Christ at Fairburn appointed a committee to raise money for a church bell. It was to be tolled before each service to remind the community of the worship hour. There is no record as to when the bell was purchased, but from recorded memories of church members, the beautifully toned bell hung in the bell tower of the wooden church until it was torn down in 1897. A new rock sanctuary was built in 1898 and the bell was placed in the new bell tower, where it remained until the church was demolished in 1969. At that time the bell was removed and made a part of the church sign adjacent to the present sanctuary, which was completed in 1965. In 1997, the church sign was removed for construction of an additional educational wing.
The bell was relocated to the Malone Street side of the rock building, honoring its history of service to the church and the Fairburn community.
The bell was manufactured by the Rumsey Company of Seneca Falls, N.Y. Information from the 1875 catalog shows this No. 8 bell at a price of $75.00. It was advertised to be 34 inches in diameter and to weigh 730 pounds.
Erected 2000 by History Committee, First Baptist Church of Fairburn.
