Regarding George Washington Elm. Wheaton's D.A.R. was one of many that planted American elm trees in honor of George Washington's 200th birthday in 1932. It was linked to a legend that he assumed command of the Continental Army in 1775 beneath an elm tree.
That said, this school building did not open until 1973 (as Wheaton-Warrenville High School), and it did not become Wheaton Warrenville South High School until 1992. It is quite likely that the marker was moved here from somewhere else, perhaps from Wheaton Central High School (previously Wheaton High School), which was about 3 miles northeast of here and closed when this school was created. (The old high school building was torn down in 2012 and today is home to a Mariano's grocery store and sports facilities.) A 2012 Google Street View image of the current location shows the marker in front of a much smaller tree.
