Financial District in Manhattan in New York County, New York — The American Northeast (Mid-Atlantic)
56-58 Pine Street Building
This notable lower Manhattan building built in 1893-94 by developer James G. Wallace and designed by his company's architect Oswald Wirz, represents a period of great unban and business growth. Originally a twelve-story office building, it illustrates a phase of New York's progression from small commercial structures to today's mammoth office towers. Faced with brick, stone and terra cotta, the facade features round-arched openings, deeply set windows, and truncated columns embellished by some of the finest Byzantine carving in the city, including intricate foliate panels and fantastic heads. The buildings height and ornate design scheme give it an unusual and distinctive presence in downtown Manhattan.
