On property purchased in 1937 from J. Wiltz Emmer, New Iberia architect Owen J. Southwell designed this eclectic, cottage-style building for Dr. Rene J. Broussard. Dr. Broussard and his wife, Lelia Gonsoulin Broussard, admired the local stone during frequent visits to the Hot Springs, Arkansas area. Stone from this region was acquired for the construction of this building and was transported to New Iberia by rail car. The stone, originally a yellow-blond color, has since been painted. The Structure was completed in 1940. At this time, Dr. Broussard moved his dental practice into the building, which attracted patients from the surrounding region. After Dr. Broussard's death in 1948, the structure was rented to a variety of businesses. The building remained in the Broussard family until the early 1990s. The structure is a contributing member of New Iberia's National Register Commercial District.
