President Woodrow Wilson created the Army Air Service in 1918 as a combat arm of the U.S. Army. In 1941, the Army Air Forces were created and made an equal counterpart to the ground forces of the Army. The Air Force became a separate military branch in 1947.
The U.S. Air Force (USAF) is charged with supporting all aspects of airpower, including air superiority; rapid global mobility; intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance; and command and control.
