Established in 1790, the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) is the nation's oldest federal sea service and was originally charged with protecting the nation's revenue by enforcing tariff laws and preventing smuggling.
As the nation grew, USCG's mission shifted to ensuring maritime safety, security, and stewardship.
In peacetime, USCG operates as an arm of the Department of Homeland Security, enforcing U.S. laws at sea; protecting marine environment, coastline and ports; and saving lives.
In times of war, or at the direction of the President, the Coast Guard operates as a service in the Department of the Navy.
