Inscription.
Ohio's flag is the only U.S. state flag shaped like a swallow-tail pennant. A flag with this shape is called a burgee. The flag was designed by John Eisenmann and adopted as the state flag in 1902.

• Despite its unusual shape, the Ohio state flag is uncomplicated in design and filled with symbolism, beginning with its use of the red, white and blue of the American flag.
• The state flag has three red and two white horizontal stripes representing the roads and waterways of the state.
• The blue triangle at the staff end represents Ohio's hills and valleys and features a white circle with a red center surrounded by five-pointed white stars in two groups - 13 stars representing the original colonies and a group of four stars at the apex of the triangle.
• The total of 17 stars recognizes Ohio's status as the 17th state admitted to the Union.
• The red-centered white circle represents an O for Ohio and is also said to resemble the state's "Buckeye" nickname.
