Silver Star Medal
The Silver Star is presented to recognize gallantry in battle and is the third highest ranking award for valiant actions. It is awarded to U.S. Armed Forces service members to recognize heroism for action against an enemy of the United States, action while serving in military operations involving conflict with a foreign foe, or action while serving with allied forces in armed combat where the United States is not the aggressor.

The Silver Star is the highest combat valor award that is not unique to a specific service branch. It can also be awarded to foreign allies and civilians for gallantry in action in support of U.S. combat missions.

Bronze Star Medal
The Bronze Star was established in 1944 and is awarded to individuals who, while serving in any capacity with the Armed Forces of the United States in a combat theater, distinguish themselves by heroism, outstanding achievement, or by meritorious service not involving aerial flight.

As with the Silver Star, civilians serving with U.S. military forces in combat are also eligible for the Bronze Star medal.
