Following its transfer to the state in 1933, a strong technical-vocational program was begun which was later intensified by World War II training efforts. Additional property and buildings were added to the campus and while World War II occasioned a temporary decrease in enrollment and programs, the returning servicemen and a burgeoning student body acclerated the quest for four-year status and dramatized the need for a new campus site.
In 1947, the legislature appropriated funds for the purchase of a new campus and the community responded with matching funds that exceeded the suggested goal. The initial phase of construction began on the new campus in 1949 and, utilizing volunteer efforts of students and faculty, campus development continued during the 1950's.
In 1949, a four-year bill for Weber College was passed by the legislature only to be vetoed by the governor, and in 1953, a special session of the legislature voted to return Weber College to the L.D.S. Church. In a special referendum vote, the people of Utah voted overwhelmingly to defeat the bill and kept Weber College a state institution.
Classes were held on the new campus beginning in 1954, and in 1959 the legislature passed the four-year bill. The school's name was changed to Weber State College in 1963. Student enrollment, campus development, curricula growth, and graduate programs have continued to mark the path of the school's progress and Weber State enters its second century secure in the knowledge that its past will provide a strong foundation for the future.
