1. New Century, New Challenges Marker
Traffic congestion created the need for a bridge to bypass the road across the top of the dam. The Mike O'Callaghan - Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, which opened on October 19, 2010, meets that need.
The halogen flood lights used for night work on the Memorial Bridge were a far cry from the lights used in the 1930s. Hoover Dam workers lit their jobsite with homemade flood lights made from dishpans.
Like Hoover Dam, the Memorial Bridge is one of the outstanding engineering and construction achievements of its time.
It is the largest steel-and-concrete composite bridge in the Western Hemisphere. The pavement of the U.S. Highway 93 is 890 feet (271 meters) above the river.
The project took ten years to design and build. It cost $240 million.
