1. Long Island Headquarters of the New York Telephone Company Marker
Inscription. Built in 1929-1930, the Long Island Headquarters of the New York Telephone Company is one of a series of communication buildings designed by New York's preeminent twentieth century architect and master of the Art Deco style, Ralph Walker of the firm Voorhees, Gmelin & Walker. The building is dramatically massed as a result of the 1916 zoning law, and rises in a series of sculptural setbacks to a prominent central tower. It is faced in orange iron-spot brick, creating undulating planes suggestive of draperies, Walker's artistic metalwork on display windows and entrances is typical of the art of the decade. The building was converted to residential use in 2007.
