1. Jack Alexander Monroe 1873-1942 Marker
Inscription. Noted and famed as a boxer, prospector, and civic leader, it was close to this location that the intrepid John Alexander "Jack" Munroe, landed in 1906. Born in Boulardarie, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia on June 26, 1873 he arrived along with his companions and his collie Bobbie Burns in search of silver. He founded the Town that became known as Elk City and his "Home Town" which grew to more than 10,000 residents. He was elected its first Mayor (Reeve) in 1909. The lure of gold drew him to the Porcupine mining camp in 1911 where he is considered the saviour of many during the great Porcupine Eire. The advent of the First World War had him enlist with the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry in August 1914. Jack’s war ended in June of 1915 when he was severely wounded and he returned to his beloved Canada to author "Mopping Up" deemed a classic of that war. He resumed his love of prospecting until his death- on February 12, 1942.

Dedicated on the 100 Anniversary of the PPCLI and Jack's enlistment!
