1. Interurban Rail Marker

Interurban Rail. . The first interurban in Texas connected Denison and Sherman in 1901, and in 1908, the Texas Traction Company constructed sixty-five miles of additional tracks which connected Sherman to Dallas, passing through downtown Van Alstyne. With the interurban making its way through town, it allowed for people to commute to other areas, as the interurban became a web of transportation to various cities and communities in Texas., The Interurban Station in Van Alstyne was constructed at the northwest corner of Preston Avenue and Marshall Street, and as of 2024 still stands. Prior to it becoming the station, there was a tin shop located at this location. The rail line of the interurban followed what is today Preston Avenue through Van Alstyne, eventually following the path of what is now Highway 5 north of town. Some of the original rail lines are still visible on Preston Avenue as of 2024.
