1. Colonial Defense Line Marker

Inscription. The Rosario Defense Line, one of St. Augustine's early fortifications, once crossed the Village properties at this location. Built soon after the English attack in 1702, the Rosario Line ran along the eastern bank of the now-filled Maria Sanchez Creek (Cordova Street) which served as its moat. The Defense Line was built of mounded earth topped off with plantings of Spanish Bayonet and cactus to discourage the enemy from attacking from the west. The Santo Cristo de la Soledad redoubt and guard house was once located here, too. The Rosario Defense Line became obsolete during the British occupation (1763 - 1783) when the western defenses of the city, were moved farther out.
