Located on this site was the 1840 home of Mr. and Mrs. J. William Robertson which was converted into the Hotel Evangeline, and frequented by the Honorable Grover Cleveland. Sold to Felix Patout in 1912, the building was replaced by the Hotel Frederic opening in 1913. The four-story hotel, pictured on the opposite side of this marker was built for Felix's four sons Fred, Gaston, Sydney, and Henry. Ownership of the hotel was acquired by Fred and Gaston, with Fred managing the hotel until his death in 1942. Fred's wife, Yvonne, took control until the hotel's closing in 1972. In 1945, Yvonne Patout married Owen Southwell, who designed a six-story wing located behind the existing Hotel Frederic. The original building was torn down in 1978, with the remaining portion of the hotel being converted by Francis Doerle, Jeff Gerrets, and renovated by owners Cindy and Mark Romero into office and residential space.
