In 1934 the U.S. Government purchased this property to build the New Gladstone Post Office. The Architect was Louis Simon, the Engineer was George O Van Nerta. The General Contractors were Victor and John Jacobson from Duluth Minnesota. There were 30 blueprints sent in July of 1934 and the building was to measure 48x59 when completed. The overall cost of the building was $36,923.00, paid for by the U.S. Dept. of Treasury.

On February 18th, 1935, the cornerstone was laid with a time capsule. The Mayor, Claude E. Hawkins gave an impressive speech that was included in the time capsule as well as a picture of the hotel that formerly stood on the property and news clippings related to the New Post Office.

Hawkins gave the history of mail being delivered by the boat (the Fawn) from Escanaba and handed out from the boat. Then the first post office was built near the rail yard and the first postmaster was Richard Mertz. The second post office was built by Mertz at 811 Delta Avenue.

The grand opening of the third Gladstone Post Office at 1003 Delta Avenue was held on July 22nd, 1935. The Postmaster serving the city at the grand opening was R.R. Micks.
