1. Engle Mill Road Bridge Marker
Inscription. Built in 1870, this bridge was restored in 2013 by the Righter Company, using money from The Federal Covered Bridge Restoration Grant and local funds. This is a 136-foot clear span Smith truss, one of the longest of this type existing in the country. It spans Anderson Fork, named for William Anderson, an early landowner. Levi B. Engle owned grist and saw mills on this watercourse. A Smith truss is a diagonal arrangement of the truss members using top and bottom chords with not just one member, but two, three or more as needed to build longer spans and support heavier loads. The diagonals are sandwiched between the chord members and bolted. The floor beams rest on top of the bottom chord. The Smith Truss was invented by Robert Smith in what is now Tipp City, Ohio.

Just south of here, twin covered bridges were damaged and collapsed in 1978. Mill Road was then closed.
