1. 1872 Marker
The cornerstone of St. Johns Church was laid with Masonic Honours on June 24th, 1872 by M. W. Bro William Mercer Wilson Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Canada. Ancient free and accepted Masons assisted by Great Western Lodge #47. William Mercer Wilson served as the first Grand Master in 1855. Church services were first held in 1796 by Sheriff Richard Pollard. The first church built in 1807 was destroyed by American forces during the War of 1812. The second church was built in 1819 and the tower was added in 1852. The present church was built on the foundation of the 1819 church and dedicated on June 23rd, 1873.
