Graham, Quigly, Adams and Hopson, of Louisville, envisioned building a resort town close to the renowned Mammoth Cave. The L&N Railroad, under construction, would pass through the area in a few years, and they smelled opportunity. They purchased the land for $20 per acre - a record amount for a land sale in Barren County at the time. , The first train on the L&N arrived at Cave City in 1859, just as the company had begun to sell lots. The Cave City post office opened the following January, with Beverly Daniel Curd appointed as postmaster. Curd and his brother opened the city's first business, a store, at what is now First and Broadway. The town was incorporated in 1866. , Yet the city is well-named, for the city and its people have been bound to the region's caves, and key events in Cave City's past point underground.
