This beautiful Neo-Classical Art Deco building was part of the Public Works Project #232, initiated during the Great Depression of the 1930's. Groundbreaking took place on May 5th, 1935. It was called the New Fireproof City Hall. It included a fire station, garage and jail cell. Gothard Arntzen was the architect. The six art panels on the front were also a part of the program to put local artists back to work. The building was to be 54x115 with a basement and Council Chambers upstairs.
Bonds went up for sale on November 15th, 1935 to raise the necessary funds to cost share the project with the Federal Government. The city raised $22,000 and the Federal Programs share was $35,200.
The building held its grand opening on July 5th, 1937 just in time for the Cities Golden Jubilee. The City Manager was E.H. Waterhouse, Mayor was Julius Bredahl and the Superintendent of Construction was Ole Peterson.
