Inscription.
In 1830, cannel coal was discovered six miles outside of Cloverport in Hancock County at Bennettsville, later known as Victoria. A clean burning coal that would eventually light the bulbs at Buckingham Palace. Queen Victoria became a stockholder in the cannel coal company. The Short Line Railroad was built from the mines of Cloverport to transport the coal to the river to load on boats. This industry drew a mix of Welsh, Scottish, English, and Irish immigrants to the area. Later, in 1851, a process was discovered in refining coal oil. This made Cloverport the first producer in the world.

In 1836, a Frenchman by the name of George LaHeist, along with John Work and Horace M. Newton, were responsible for laying out the town of Cloverport. This was recorded on October 8, 1836. Though some street names have changed and other streets no longer exist, the town still lays the same.

Cloverport and Joeville agreed to incorporation on February 11, 1860. The name Cloverport was kept and the post office remained on the East Side.
