1. Elora Drill Shed/Le Manège Militaire D’Elora Marker
This handsome stone structure, built in 1865, is a rare surviving example of early drill hall architecture in Canada. During the 1860s, the American Civil War and the Fenian raids raised fears for the defence of British North America. In response, the Canadian militia was strengthened, and many rural communities erected drill halls to train their volunteers. Notable for its classical proportions, its semicircular fan light over the door and oculus in the gable, this is an unusually well-constrncted building of its type.
Ce bel édifice en pierre construit en 1865 constitue un rare exemple des premiers manèges militaires au Canada. La guerre de Sécession américaine et les raids féniens firent craindre à l'époque pour la défense de l’Amérique du Nord britannique. On renforça done la milice canadienne et, dans de nombreux villages, on érigea des manèges pour y former des volontaires. Se distinguant par ses proportions classiques, son imposte en éventail et l’oculus de son pignon, le manège d'Elora demeure une construction exceptionnelle en son genre.
