Harrington Merrill House
HM House Important Dates
1855Hutchinson becomes a town.
1857Lewis Harrington and Ellen Pendergast marry.
1858Harrington's [sic] finish building the house.
1858Minnesota becomes a state.
1862The house survives an attack by the Dakota during the US-Dakota War.
1884Lewis Harrington dies.
1886Harry Merrill marries the Harrington's daughter, Martha. The couple move into the house with Martha's mother, Ellen Harrington.
1915Ellen Pendergast Harrington dies.
1932Harry Merril [sic] dies.
1935Martha Merrill dies. Merrill's son, Lewis, becomes the owner of the house.
1945circa Barn is moved off the property.
1970Lewis Merrill dies and the home falls into disrepair.
2000Historic Hutchinson is formed.
2002Fire destroys the kitchen wing of the house and severely damages the rest of the structure.
2003The house is acquired by the City of Hutchinson. Historic Hutchinson partners with the city to restore the house.
2007Damaged kitchen and interior of the main house are rebuilt/repaired.
2012Placed on National Registry of Historic Places
2017-2018Original carriage house is repaired and restored.
2021-2022Historic Hutchinson discovers the barn and saves it from demolition. The barn is moved to its original location.
HM House Architecture/Renovations
1858The home was built in the Greek Revival style by Lewis and Ellen Harrington. A two story home with a front gabled entrance and a one story, shed-roof entry porch.
1886Harry and Martha (Harrington) Merrill add new Victorian architectural design. A two-story bay window and one-story box bay window were added to the south side. A one-story summer kitchen wing was added to the west side. Between 1890-1915 a screened pavilion on the south and a bedroom on the north were added.

1935Lewis Merrill changed the old Victorian details. The two-story bay windows became a one-story entry. The summer kitchen was removed, the porch of the kitchen wing was altered and a second dormer window added.
2007Historic Hutchinson and The City of Hutchinson began the restoration process to restore its appearance to the 1886 to early 1900's renovations.
