1. Adkins Barn/Blacksmith Shop Marker
Inscription. Elijah Stanton Adkins, the donor of the original 154 acres of Furnace Town, also donated this barn to Furnace Town in 1980. Constructed about 1890, the building shows signs of expansion and changes during its life, including an addition in 2001. Converted into the Blacksmith Shop, this working structure includes an historic double forge that has been used by blacksmiths. Works by blacksmiths, tinsmiths (whitesmiths) and wheelwrights are on display. The Furnace Town Blacksmith Guild operates a third forge within the structure. The importance of the blacksmith to any rural community cannot be overstated. He provided the ironwork necessary for the construction of buildings shoed horses, repaired wagons and carts, made farming and cooking utensils, as well as many other useful products.
