Downtown New Iberia Commercial Historic District retains both its architectural and historical identity as a center of commerce recreation and entertainment for the city of New Iberia and the surrounding region. The 68.8 acre, 9 block district is bordered along Main Street and St. Peter Street from Jefferson Street to Weeks Street. District consists of 122 buildings and 1 site of which 81 buildings are considered historically significant contributing properties, and of these properties 7 are individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Building dates vary from 1866 to 1967 and represent an important example of a late 19th to mid-20th century American Main Street Townscape Historic District.
