Inscription.
"Mr. Nelson's life of seventy-eight years was so full of activity that he was known to many people in many lands. He was…a dreamer with visions carrying far into the future and yet with the ability to mold altruism into everyday life - a philanthropist of international fame."

From N.O. Nelson Manufacturing Company's "In Memoriam," Oct. 14, 1922

N.O. Nelson sought to inspire his workers and fellow neighbors to live their best lives by providing important opportunities for people to act on their own behalf by creating a beautiful and thoughtful space where a person could make a decent wage which were additionally augmented by returns from profit-sharing in his factories, own their own home, and have access to free educational resources and year-round recreation.

Nelson Manufacturing employees appreciated his efforts, and after his October 5, 1922, death they agreed to donate one day's wages toward a monument in his honor. Designed and sculpted by Victor Holm, head of Washington University's School of Art, it symbolized the democracy Nelson promoted as well as his love of nature (the turkey and the conch shell) and his love of children and dedication to their welfare (the boy). This sculpture, within the context of the entire memorial, whose architect was Gabriel Ferrand,
