Peirce-du Pont House
Built Between 1730-1914
The Pierce-du Pont House is named for the Peirce and du Pont families, who lived on the property for over 200 years. It is one of the best artifacts on the property to learn about Longwood's history.
The Peirce family built original sections of the house and lived there through the end of the 19th century. They planted a collection of trees called Peirce's Park on the west side.
Pierre S. du Pont (1870-1954) purchased the property in 1906 to save the historic trees in Peirce's Park. He named his newly purchased farm "Longwood" and began to indulge his interest in horticulture.
Du Pont made additions to the house for modernization and comfort. The largest addition was Longwood's first conservatory, located at the center of the house, which doubled the size of the living space and serves as its central feature today.
Visit Inside the House
The first floor is open to the public; areas feature the original 1730s architecture and du Pont's modernizations, including hist 1914 conservatory and library. Inside, explore Longwood's Heritage Exhibit and a series of short films about the Gardens' past and future.
