Queen of the Courtyard
South American water-platters are famous for their immense size, fragrant flowers, and unusual features. Longwood's hybrid water-platter stands among the world's largest.
Our hybrid is a cross of two Victoria species, named to honor Queen Victoria of Great Britain. Compared to its parents, on view nearby, it has even bigger flowers and wider leavesup to 6 feet across.
History & Legacy
In the 1960s, Patrick Nutt, our first waterlily expert, fused research, plant exploration, and breeding to develop Longwood's Victoria hybrid.
We've since shared our knowledge and the plant's seeds with more than 140 gardens worldwide.
