Inscription. Bethel Baptist is the oldest African American church in Transylvania County. Prior to 1865, African American Baptists in the County attended Cathey’s Creek church. As slaves, they were relegated to the back of the church. Their participation was limited to listening and tending to slaveholder’s children. In 1865, this group of African American people was declared free by law. They organized to establish a church of their own.
