Inscription.
Salems Chinatown existed on this block before the construction of this two-story building. Retail shops occupied the first floor while the New Salem Hotel provided lodging. John Hughes married Emma Pringle in 1857. The family opneded a mercantile store in 1863 that became one of the most important businesses in the Willamette Valley.
