Regarding Veterans Memorial. While the marker states "Grand Army of the Republic" [G.A.R.] beneath the "Revolutionary War," the G.A.R. had nothing to do with the Revolutionary War. The G.A.R. was the largest Civil War Union veterans' fraternal organization. A quick scan of about half of the veterans' names on the marker revealed that they were Revolutionary War veterans.
Clearly, there were likely several hundred Union Civil War veterans from Greenfield Township and Portage County, so it appears that those who crafted the marker misunderstood the meaning of the "G.A.R."
