Iberia Parish's first permanent courthouse was constructed near this site in 1884 the three-story plastered brick structure featured a mansard roof with a tower. By 1921, the need for expansion was evident, a floor of offices replaced the former mansard roof and the front of the building gained a Greek Revival facade the remodel was meant to extend the life of the building. However, by 1938, groundwork for a new courthouse was underway, the new and current Iberia Parish court building, completed in 1940, is located at 300 Iberia Street. The 1884 building was sold in 1949 by the parish and became the Colonial Theater, eventually being demolished in 1975 creating what is now Bouligny Plaza.
