1. Historic Leyden Mine Marker
Inscription.
The Leyden Mine was a major coal mine in Colorado producing coal to power industries. The tramway, warm homes, mining activity began in 1865 and the mine closed in 1950. This memorial honors the lives of eleven miners who died as a result of the Leyden Coal Mine fire on December 14, 1910.

Regarding Historic Leyden Mine. By 1910 Leyden had 250 daytime employees and shifts both day and night. At 7:55pm the night of December 14, 1910, a fire smoldering in the veins broke into the motor room of Shaft #2. 25 miners 750 below the surface were in a fight for their lives. 10 men and 29 mules perished. The 11th man, Fred D. Newmeyer, died six years later as a result of his efforts to rescue the miners. Article written by Golden Historian Richard Gardner.
