Guggenheim Hall
Guggenheim Hall
To the south, above the trees, you may see a gold domed cupola. Its the top of Guggenheim Hall on the Colorado School of Mines campus.
The funds for the building were donated in 1905 by Simon Guggenheim, a United States Senator for Colorado. But the fortune that made this donation and other notable Guggenheim family gifts possible was started by Simons father, Meyer Guggenheim.
Meyer emigrated from Switzerland to the United States in 1848 and began selling notions door to door. His entrepreneurial sense led to manufacturing and improving the products he sold and opening stores and factories. In 1881, Guggenheim purchased shares in two Leadville, Colorado, silver mines, which in turn inspired him to open his own ore smelter in Pueblo, Colorado. Continued investments and improvements helped the family avoid the silver crash crisis of the early 1890s.
Meyer had a large family and instilled in them an appreciation of education, culture, and music that has continued to pay dividends in Colorado, the United States, and around the world.
