The Village Leaders
Ministry's Workshop, 1821
| | Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill | |
The Ministry's Workshop provided work space for two men and two women referred to collectively as the Ministry. They provided spiritual leadership for the community, kept journals, conducted the official correspondence for the Village, and performed physical labor to set an example of industry for the other Shakers.
Because they lived apart from the rest of the community on the second floor of the Meeting House, the location of the Workshop was very convenient. The Ministry's Workshop embodied the secular work of their leadership while the Meeting House represented the spiritual role.
The Ministry should "in no wise blend in common with the rest of the people; they may not work under the same roof, live in the same house, nor eat at the same table."
- Shaker Millennial Laws (Revised October 1845)
