This building is a true testament of longevity and commitment to the community. Hupy Insurance served the people of Gladstone and the surrounding area for 104 years.
Philip Hupy was born in Spalding Michigan in 1881. He came to Gladstone in 1902 to work for the Postal, Telegraph, Cable Company as an operator. He married Hattie Benechek in 1910. Identifying the needs for insurance within the community, Phil opened his first insurance office at 718 Delta Ave. In 1907. After a massive fire that destroyed five buildings, he moved into this brand-new building at 906 Delta Ave.
Phil Hupy was one of the most energetic and involved pioneers in the new City. He served as the City Assessor, Notary, Justice of the Peace, and President of the School Board. He belonged to many clubs and organizations, always in the best interest of the city. He acquired and sold Real Estate and was instrumental in organizing the committee to establish a new Veterans Hospital, even willing to donate 20 acres on the bluff if this area had been chosen.
Upon retirement, Phil's son Robert (Bob) acquired the business and later was joined by grandson Grant. The building was expanded to include 908 Delta Ave and continued to serve the insurance and real estate needs of the community. Phil Hupy passed away in 1966.
In October 2006, Bruce Movalson and Paul Fix of Northern Insurance Agency in Escanaba, expanded their business to Gladstone. They purchased this building and business and completely remodeled in the summer of 2007, for the 100th Anniversary of the building.
