1. 908 Delta Ave. Marker
The Delmonico Cafe occupied this building from 1914 to 1920. Formerly located on the corner of Delta and Central Ave. E.W. Perkins was the proprietor.
The Cafe was moved to this location and operated by Mary McCauley and her sister Emily. Mary was born Mary Ann Callihan in 1881 in Canada. Arriving as a young child first to Rapid River then to Gladstone in 1905. She married Hector McCauley a railroad conductor for the Soo Line, in 1920. Mary passed away in 1934.
The building next became the Gladstone Railroad Union Co-op. This business originated at 714 Delta Ave. The Co-op business struggled through several managers and three locations within the city. It operated for over 20 years.
Harold Aplegren opened the Aplegren Houshold Appliance Store on 10TH street in 1946. After a few years Harold moved the business to 908 Delta Ave. Harold was born in Gladstone in 1919 and served six years in the Navy. Ha married Mary Gadbury in 1944 and they settled in Gladstone and had five children.
Robert Mathison graduated from Northern Michigan University in 1934 and went into the Radio and TV repair business in 1935. He went to work for Mr. Aplegren in 1955 and when Aplegren left this location Mr. Mathison continued as Mathison's TV and Radio of Gladstone, for 21 years.
