More about this memorial. In 1918, after the end of World War I, the Warrenton Civic Club wanted to erect a memorial to the seven men and two women from Warren County, Georgia who had died in World War I. To do this, they directed a fundraising drive with the help of the county's school children. This fundraising drive lasted two years and accumulated enough pennies to cover the memorial's cost. In 1920, the Warren County World War I Memorial was erected by the school children in front of the old Warrenton Senior High School on Academy Street. This building was razed in the early 1990s, and the memorial was relocated to the Warren County Board of Education building on the adjacent property. It was later relocated to the nearby First Baptist Church Warrenton when the Board of Education moved its offices to Gibson Road.
For thirty years, the memorial was forgotten. Then, in 2023, American Legion member James Newsome found it, dirty and illegible and in need of restoration. Newsome launched a fundraising drive of his own, which involved contributions from local school children and was similar to the original fundraising drive that occurred a century before. The restoration was the first one ever undertaken for the memorial in its 103-year existence and was done by the Reese-Hyman Post 96 American Legion and Burkhalter Chapter NSDAR. On November 11, 2023, the memorial, now cleaned, made legible and restored to its original glory, was relocated to the grounds of the Warren County Courthouse by the school children of 2023, thus giving it a prominent place to be discovered by present and future generations.
