Papillion in Sarpy County, Nebraska — The American Midwest (Upper Plains)
Sander House & Golden Rule
Site of the Former Sander House
This site was the location of the Albert H. Sander's house. Built in the autumn of 1869, it was one of the first three houses built in Papillion. The house was torn down in 1918, and materials from its frame were hauled across the street to the Court House Exchange Hotel for use in the construction of the hotel's addition. A. H. Sander was the original owner of the entire square block encompassing the blocks of 100 N. Washington, 100 N. Jefferson, 100 E. First and 100 E. Second streets.
Golden Rule Supermarket
The current building was built in 1950 for the Golden Rule Supermarket by Lee Duffey. The store was purchased in 1970 by its manager, Kenneth "Barney" Shives, and its butcher, Earl Sorensen. The front of the store was located on Jefferson, resulting in the store having an address of 106 N. Jefferson St. The modern grocery store was a reflection of post-war shopping as Papillion moved past its 1870's railroad town framework. After serving as the supermarket for several years, it became the Midtown Mall. Prior to the supermarket, this location housed a farm implement and hardware store owned by Harold Lutz.
