Atchison & Nebraska Railroad
The few remaining concrete posts and barbed wire are the last reminder of the fence built by the Atchison-Nebraska Railroad. The first railroad in Richardson Co. ran at the base of this hill where the highway is now located. The first track was laid in Atchison, Kansas on Sept. 22, 1870. It reached this point on January 10, 1871 and the final destination in Lincoln, Nebr., a distance of 106. 5 mi., on August 27, 1872. The Missouri River ran parallel to the track making erosion a major problem. The line was abandoned in 1933. It was 144 mi. from Atchison to Lincoln.
