Excerpt:  The namesake of the stadium has a great story.
Football fans cannot help but notice the closeness of the football stadium to the highway. When it was built by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930s, highways were much narrower, motor vehicles were not used as much as they are today. US Highway 287 was a two-lane country highway. As traffic increased the highway needed to be expanded. This curiosity makes this one of the most unique stadiums in Texas, and worth a visit on game night to see how it plays.
